Project objectives and targets

Objective 1: Review existing policy, best practice and tools for governing sustainable living and establish network for sustainable consumption research

Target 1.1: Review state of the EU Directives on production and consumption and catalogue international best practice models and tools for Quality of Life Proofing
Target 1.2: Measure and evaluate Ireland’s progress regarding a) sustainable consumption policies and b) their implementation (including interventions such as eco-labelling) 
Target 1.3: Establish all-island network for sustainable consumption research
Target 1.4: Host international workshop on sustainable consumption
Target 1.5: Publish edited volume

Objective 2: Design Sustainable Living Survey (SLS) and generate baseline data on attitudes and behaviours towards sustainable consumption

Target 2.1: Secondary analysis of existing data on household consumption in Ireland and identification of gaps in existing knowledge
Target 2.2: Development of survey questionnaire to address gaps identified in 2.1
Target 2.3: Production and dissemination of a large Irish specific baseline dataset on patterns of consumption
Target 2.4: Production of innovative model for the identification of factors impacting attitudes and behaviours towards sustainable lifestyle and consumption e.g. understanding potential demand for, and public acceptance of policy and interventions.
Target 2.5: Cross-national comparative analysis of sustainable consumption trends and attitudes and behaviour
Target 2.6: Formulation of methodological framework and indicators for long-term monitoring of progress based on SLS data 

Objective 3: Establishment of tools for assessment and modification of mobility patterns and sustainable consumption of distance in Ireland

Target 3.1: Explore current transport and mobility patterns
Target 3.2: Review national and international transport policy frameworks with particular focus on NI/RoI cross border policy learning
Target 3.3: Identify and test incentives to encourage modal shift and formulate and publish guidelines for sustainable transport
Target 3.4: Development and testing of virtual mobility tools (e.g. use of e-government services) with Digital Enterprise Research Institute at NUI, Galway (DERI).

Objective 4: Develop and test scenarios for sustainable households: shelter

Target 4.1: Review international programmes and policies for sustainable household heating, cooling and lighting
Target 4.2: Using stakeholder workshops develop future scenarios for more sustainable households with respect to space heating, cooling and lighting
Target 4.3: Establish an environmental assessment of each scenario developed
Target 4.4: Identify householders’ responses to proposed scenarios
Target 4.5: Using stakeholder workshops to review findings of environmental assessments and consumer research and provide an action plan and policy recommendations

Objective 5: Develop and test scenarios for sustainable households: washing

Target 5.1: Review international programmes and policies for sustainable household washing activities
Target 5.2: Using stakeholder workshops develop future scenarios for more sustainable households with respect to washing activities
Target 5.3: Establish an environmental assessment of each scenario developed
Target 5.4: Identify householders’ responses to proposed scenarios
Target 5.5: Using stakeholder workshops to review findings of environmental assessments and consumer research and provide an action plan and policy recommendations

Objective 6: Develop and test scenarios for sustainable households: food

Target 6.1: Review international programmes and policies for sustainable household shopping, cooking and eating
Target 6.2: Using stakeholder workshops develop future scenarios for more sustainable households with respect to shopping, cooking and eating
Target 6.3: Establish an environmental assessment of each scenario developed
Target 6.4: Identify householders’ responses to proposed scenarios
Target 6.5: Using stakeholder workshops to review findings of environmental assessments and consumer research and provide an action plan and policy recommendations

Objective 7: Project planning, coordination and synthesis

Target 7.1: Project management and coordination
Target 7.2: Facilitate collaboration, communication and information flow between different research teams, advisory committee and working groups through the organisation of regular meetings and workshops.
Target 7.3: Tailored dissemination of results for diverse target groups and stakeholders e.g. householders, community fora, local authorities, NGOs and policy makers.  
Target 7.4: Liaise with EPA data manager regarding SAFER updates
Target 7.5: Organise and prepare publications including EPA progress reports and the final research report
